Many people enjoy receiving the newspaper. They like to know about what’s going on in the world and their community, read the sports or comics section, and perhaps even to do the crossword puzzle. Some of them enjoy it so much that they go on to try to sell the newspaper to others.
A lot of this is because the task of dialing through a list of numbers is not only time-consuming, but monotonous and tiring as well. The solution to this is for the telephone company to use a dialer.
This electronic device dials the numbers for the salespeople, reducing the amount of time they spend pushing buttons and holding a phone to their ear. As a result, they are less likely to get bored with their jobs and quit.
There are several varieties of dialers available. One type is a computer program that dials a connection to the Internet. This type, however, is not very useful for advertising and selling newspapers. Another kind is the auto dialer. This dials numbers for the salesperson, but it does not have any way of knowing when the call is answered by a live person.
This results in a lot more potential sales for the newspaper company. In addition, some dialers, known as predictive dialers, have software that deals with calls that are not answered, or that are answered by an answering machine, a fax, or a modem. Unanswered calls are dropped, and the dialer dials them again later.
Calls that are answered by a fax or modem are also dropped, and their numbers are removed from the database. All of this happens without the salesperson ever having to dial a number, listen to a ring tone, or hear the screech of a fax in their ear.
A lot of people get a job selling newspapers because they either enjoy talking to people, really like the newspaper, or both. Many of them, however, do not enjoy talking to a person’s voice mail. They may have a hard time figuring out what to say, or they may worry that they will sound stupid.
When a call is answered by an answering machine, the dialer places a pre-recorded message on it so that the person making the calls never has to talk to a machine. This frees up more of their time and energy for actually selling papers. In addition, it enables them to talk to more people in a day, which in turn results in more subscriptions.
