Should I Work on Professions While Leveling?

Whether you are just getting started with your very first World of Warcraft toon or you are someone who is looking for a whole new way to play, leveling is going to be on your mind, and chances are good that your professions are not far behind it! Professions are something that some people love, some people don’t bother with and other people are just plain confused by. What do you need to know about your primary and secondary professions, especially if leveling is a priority?

First, start by remember that professions are not necessary. While they will make certain things easier, not having them will not keep you from getting to level 80. Leveling a profession is something that definitely takes time and effort and if you are intent on getting to Northrend as quickly as possible, you will want to come back and pick up the professions later on if you want them at all!

While that is all true, you should also look at how professions can help you. The three secondary professions that anyone can pick up are Fishing, Cooking and First Aid, and at the very least, First Aid can be leveled using the cloth that will drop from the mobs that you are fighting. While making bandages does take time, you will find that they can be important to your healthy as you progress. First Aid can also easily be leveled by buying a lot of cloth from the Auction House!

You should also be aware that there are bonuses to some of the professions that are going to make you more effective as you play the game. For instance, if you level your Skinning up, you are going to be able to get the bonus Master of Anatomy; this makes your ability to score critical hits against others much more likely. Similarly, if you level your Herbalism up to a certain amount, you will find that you are in a great place to get Lifeblood, a heal over time. If you are playing a class without an ability to heal itself, like warrior or warlock, this can make a huge difference during pitched battles.

Remember that when you get right down to it, professions are ways for you to make money. If you are a gear dependent class, you will discover that this is something that is quite important for you and if you are saving up for a flying mount, you will discover that this is something that can make your progression much faster. First Aid can help you level by improving your ability to survive, but also remember that if you don’t want to bother with it, you don’t have to.
