Laptop computers have increased in popularity over the last ten years and it is now very common for at least one member of a household (if not all) to own one. The models have evolved massively in terms of their power capabilities, extra features and security levels and the range of models on the market today is huge.

If you plan to invest in a model for the first time then there are a number of aspects to consider before you make your purchase. Everyone will have their own priorities and specific requirements when it comes to choosing the right model but there are a number of basic issues that you should address before starting your search. Try out the keyboard to make sure it fits your fingers - miniature keyboards are fine if you only rarely press a button or if you have small fingers. If you must have a small keyboard and still want to type comfortably, consider fewer keys (which have multiple functions) rather than lots of small keys.
If you intend to travel a lot with your laptop then make sure that it is sturdy enough to stand up to constant movement. Avoid flimsy hinges and catches which might break off in transit or if accidentally knocked. Also, if you intend to work a lot whilst travelling on the train for example then make sure that the pointing device can cope with vibration. Palm rests in front of the keyboard can help provide a stable base to minimise vibrations.
Decide how much weight you can physically cope with carrying around. Most notebooks are reasonably light but most require power leads and external mains transformers which can add weight. You may also need to carry business papers and other equipment with you so make sure that the combined weight is comfortable enough to carry on a daily basis and not damage your back or shoulders. Laptop computers often come with a bag so it may be best to opt for the rucksack variety as the two straps are far better for spreading the weight.
When it comes to choosing the machine specification, go for one which is only slightly more powerful than you think you need now. When you are considering processor speed, memory and hard disk capacity the same rule applies, go for the model that does what you need it to do for you now. Specifications change so fast that yesterday’s top of the range computer quickly becomes tomorrow’s entry-level machine. If your laptop does what you want, at a price you can afford then forget about how much better you could have done if you had put off buying it until tomorrow, there will always be newer models.
